RockDove's mission is to take the world's most neglected shoe and give it a modern makeover. The company experiments with innovative fabrics used in performance footwear, and applies design principles from fashion shoemaking. RockDove focuses solely on making slippers, which helps them stay true to their core beliefs in business, including innovation, design, ethical manufacturing, and consistent sizing.

RockDove was created in 2002 for five birdwatchers of the Los Angeles Audubon Society, who were the company's initial customers when it was a beachside workshop in Santa Monica, California that resoled hiking boots. For fifteen years, RockDove protected the feet of avid adventurers as their local shoe cobbler. Over time, customers asked for quality indoor shoes to console their high-mileage, trail-weary feet, which led RockDove to start handmaking slippers.

Shoe brands in southern California don't pay much attention to slippers, so RockDove had little to build on. However, they knew how to make comfortable, long-lasting footwear. Using materials like mattress memory foam, gel insoles, and anti-shock cushioning from hiking boots, they designed slippers with the goal of comforting extremely tired feet. After sending out a newsletter about their slipper experiment, RockDove received 350 mail orders, prompting them to name their slippers after the rock dove (pigeon).

To this day, RockDove's legacy of creating footwear for the most exhausted, adventure-wearied feet lives on. They make slippers so that anyone who's on their feet all day, from passionate outdoorsmen to various professions, can count on switching into the world's most comfortable slippers once they get home.

RockDove's quest to get comfort down to a science pushed them to become one of the earliest adopters of high-density memory foam in slippers. They worked with local sleep experts to source memory foam toppers, which they then molded into insoles. After obsessively tweaking the density and firmness ratings, they created a "sweet spot" level of comfort, with a multilayered foam construction at the heart of each RockDove slipper.
